The sixth grade curriculum is primarily taught through a hands-on, problem solving approach using the Connected Math Program (CMP) and following the grade level expectation (GLE’s) for math. Students work cooperatively in groups as well as individually on concepts and skills developing strong mathematical habits. It is important that they complete the homework to reinforce the concepts and skills learned in class. Students continually work on problem solving through the Problems of the Week. Check the WEB site to see which one is due each week. Each problem must contain the five distinct parts (the question, known information, the strategy to solve the problem, an explanation including the work, and a conclusion) and is given four scores (concepts, problem solving, skills/tools, and written communication). Students should use their math rubric before turning in the Problem of the Week and again when revising them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Additionally, in class we are focusing on becoming self-directed learners. Students can achieve this by: 1. Having necessary
materials for class (ie. notebooks, pencils, calculators, and homework). Students that know their multiplication tables tend to be more successful in mathematics.
