Mr. Seekell's Class Policies

Homework

Homework is usually given nightly.  It is due the next class unless the students are otherwise instructed.  Students are given answers to the questions when they come into class and are expected to check them.  Issues with the solutions are then discussed.  You will find that an assignment of 5-10 problems is typical.  This is because each of the problems require the student to use critical thinking skills to justify their answers mathematically and it may take several minutes to solve each problem.  You will rarely see a problem that looks as simple as "change 152% to a mixed numeral".  The problem may require that task, but it will be in context of a larger situation.

Assessments

Students will be working on several types of assessments during the year.  There will be weekly mini-quizzes and homework quizzes to make sure that students are not falling behind.  There are partner quizzes which involve a small group, usually pairs, performing an investigation and then using problem solving and critical thinking skills to justify their conclusions.  Other types of assessments will include larger scale quizzes and unit tests, as well as major unit exams which assess larger bodies of knowledge.

Retaking Assessments

Students are permitted to retake certain assessments, usually limited to the smaller quizzes and Problems of the Week, in order to show that they have mastered the concepts in question.  They know that they can see me to schedule that within one week of receiving the original paper back.

Extra Help

Extra help is available as needed.  Students should come and see me to schedule a time to meet.  Most students will need this at various times throughout the year.
