ASFMS Student Expectations

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a process for creating safer and more effective schools by focusing on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students.  This is a state initiative sponsored by the Paul V. Sherlock Center at Rhode Island College.  For the past year the PBIS team has been involved in intensive trainings and ASFMS is now ready for full implementation.  Our school supports the following school-wide expectations:

Falcon Code (3R’s):

Respectful                              Responsible                            Reliable

Students will be provided with many opportunities to learn and practice these expectations.  In order to help students know exactly how to behave in all areas, specific examples are also posted throughout the school building.  When teachers and staff members observe students demonstrating these behaviors they will be acknowledged in a variety of ways.  Once a month, Talon Tickets earned will be drawn by grade and students will receive incentives.  You may also see acknowledgments in the form of a Positive Post Card, Student of the Month or Positive Referral!

Our PBIS Team meets and reviews our school-wide systems (Universal) such as how the students are responding to our Falcon Code and how many Discipline Referral Forms are given out.  A Discipline Referral Form is written and sent home to a parent if the student continues to not respond to our interventions.  However, students are written up immediately for acts of physical aggression, abusive language, or other major rule violations.  As you can see, there are procedures in place to address behavior in a systematic way.  See our Classroom Management Behavior Plan and Discipline Infraction Definitions

Our Target Intervention/RtI Team will be receiving extensive research based training in order to develop plans to help students who are not being successful with our Universal school-wide system.  Some of the plans include checking in with a teacher or staff member at scheduled time intervals for coaching, social skills training, and work completion charts.

Families find it helpful to use the school-wide PBIS expectations of the Falcon Code (3R’s) at home.  Being Respectful, Responsible, and Reliable are all behaviors that need to be practiced at home, at school, and in the community.
